The 26th edition of the Bach Festival in Świdnica, one of the most prestigious classical music events in Poland, has begun. Since 2000, the festival has been attracting music lovers, offering not only top-class concerts, but also a unique atmosphere that combines the history, art and spirituality of the region.

The idea behind the festival

The inspiration for the Bach Festival was the Church of Peace in Świdnica and its history – it was here in the 18th century that Christoph Gottlob Wecker (ca. 1700 – 1774), a pupil of Johann Sebastian Bach, was the cantor of the church. Świdnica has become a place where early music regains its natural context – in historic interiors, away from the beaten track, surrounded by the nature of Lower Silesia.

This year's edition will run from 24 July to 3 August, with an epilogue planned for 2 September. The programme includes concerts at the Peace Church, Świdnica Cathedral and several locations in the region, including Jedlina-Zdrój, Pożarzysko, Zastruż, Walim, Żarów and Bagieniec.

There will also be cantata services, concerts by the Bach Academy and open-air events such as ‘Breakfast in the Park’ – musical picnics in picturesque locations.

The opening concert – a tribute to Bach

The festival was opened on Thursday, 24 July, by Jean Rondeau, who performed the Goldberg Variations – the masterpiece of the festival's patron – in the Peace Church. The performance was preceded by a ceremonial opening with representatives of the city and the community. The audience was welcomed by the director of the Świdnica Cultural Centre, Ms Bożena Kuźma, and Pastor Paweł Meler, who officially opened the festival.
